So we made it here in Nebraska. As usual, we drove through the night to make it here before our first full day off. After I drove the first half to North Platte, Amy took over to tackle the back roads of the middle of nowhere Nebraska.
I had been dozing on and off for a while when Amy had swerved to pass some cows on the road. That was when I made the comment that when there is moon light, animals do weird and crazy things. Advice given to me from a fellow manager, who goes duck hunting. Amy, is good at the back roads, and navigates them well at great speeds. We had a one antler deer cross in front of us, then down the road, about ten miles from the cows, and we started to wonder what happened to it.
Because it was well lit, and a few run ins with the local wildlife, Amy had reduced her speed to fifty-five miles an hour. After completing the Brownlee Pass, we saw four smaller deer off to the right side of the road. Then out of nowhere, a deer from the left was going stride for stride with us for about two seconds and THUD! we became a statistic. It seemed like the deer wanted to out run us and cut in front of us.
The damage so far is visual, the driver side front panel is dented enough to prevent us opening the driver side door and the headlamp is sacked out. I called the insurance agency they would have sent some one out, but they all seem to be away for the holiday. Everyone is fine, I'm grateful nothing worse happened, we would have been stuck in the middle of nowhere until the sun came up. Amy kept apologizing about the car, but it's one of those things that we could have avoided, if I didn't come up with the great idea to drive through the night.
God was with us, after the deer incident, the clouds pulled over and the roads were clear of large animals. We saw a few small mice and critters like that but nothing gigantic. Amen God for getting us here safely.
