Fill in the blank, when I was younger, I wanted to be ______________.
How did you come about your dreams/plans?(friends, family, peers, values, expectations)
In the Old Testament, priests were priests, because their fathers were. College is all about getting to the dream, right?
Gideon was called to a purpose by God Judges 6:11-19
- He did spend time to figure out if God was serious about choosing him, in the end he answered the call
- What kind of dreams/plans was Gideon after (threshing wheat in a wine press and gave excuses
- What would the 12 year old version of yourself say about you know?
Are you presently on course for your dreams/plans?
What kind of other preparation do you anticipate you’ll need?
Sealing your purpose in your heart Proverbs 4:23
- Your dreams/plans are yours; don’t let others effect them, by distracting you or even manipulating them
- Play Doh gets nasty when left out, dirt, hardening, changes color
- Protect them, do everything possible to see it happen
How many of you here are originally from another place in the country?
Before getting to college, what were your goals while being here?
There is no excuse because you are moving on, in due time Nehemiah 5:14-16
- They were challenged by knowing they were there for one purpose, yet they didn’t let that be a reason not to reach out those around them
- The acquired no land, when they were in Jerusalem rebuilding the wall
- You have a purpose here to be a student, to gain a successful career, but you can be about the purpose to glorify God while doing so
- They change how others viewed men in office, by being different
What are you doing in the mean time, while in college?
Jesus Purpose While Ministering Mark 10:41-47
- It was three and a half years he walked with the purpose to demonstrate He was here for our salvation – that is the same as your college career?
If you’re on the fence about this stuff, so was I Proverbs 16:1-4
- When I came to know Jesus, it was from a great friend of mine, Jim Mascarelli. He became a Disciple when I needed to see that an eternal, worldwide purpose is bigger than saving the prairie dogs along the Turnpike
- This was my turn to scripture when I decided to cut back my involvement with my kung fu school to attend meetings of the bodyIt serves as a reminder to me, when I go through major changes in my life, career, dating/marriage, school, interests
Tonight I hope you feel better in tune to what the spirit of God has in store for you.
- If I were to ask your closest friends, could they say what your purpose is? Would it match up with what you say your purpose is?
- I remember the start of my first year here at CU, having a hard time with seeing people save the earth, the trees, dogs, trash, needy children in far off countries, etc. It seemed that every one in Boulder had a purpose for being here.
- Look around on campus, there is always some one at the fountain on a loud speaker, or the refugee camp that sprouts up when the World Economic Summit is in town, or there is some group doing something to get some ones attention to join their group.
- The World is always something to remind you that if you do not have a purpose that will impact the world, your soul is somehow not complete and your life is empty. This gave me quite a bit of insecurity about with what I was doing with my life.
- But now, with the Holy Spirit, I feel I have greater purpose to myself, by honoring God’s will for my life. As you leave here tonight, search out your purpose while you are in school.
- Regardless of what you do in 2-4 years from now, is what you are doing here and now going to have the impact you could never dream about it?
I leave you with some particles:
- Spend time weighing your dreams versus your purpose
- Spend time in the word and prayer listening to what God has for you while you still in college
- Ask others what they see in your actions and if they are consistent with what you want to achieve right now
- Surround yourself with those who share your purpose
